My guest this week is Justin Renard, the head of marketing for Pronoun.
You know Pronoun, right? Their mission is to build a new model for publishing that puts authors first. They believe that independent authors deserve a better way to publish and they think they’re creating the tools, technology, and information authors need to succeed in today’s digital market.
About a year ago Pronoun was acquired by Macmillan Publishers, and things have really begun to get interesting for them over the past six months.
I was very pleased to get Pronoun’s head of marketing, Justin Renard on the show and we spend our time chatting about the tools and distribution they’re offering to indie authors, which include, as of last week, distribution to libraries.

I’d love to hear from someone who’s been with them for a while if they feel the trade-off in royalties is worth it.
From what I’m seeing, looks like authors get higher royalties for books outside Amazon’s preferred price range in the North America in exchange for lower international royalties? Is that your understanding as well, Steve?
Thanks for the comment! I didn’t think of that during the interview, but yes, the international pricing doesn’t make completely make sense to me. Their non-Amazon royalties are more consistent, so I expect there’s something I don’t understand about the way they deal with international royalties for Amazon. Hopefully someone who knows will post here and let us know.
