In today’s show, we take a deep dive into a variety of ways you can use data to improve the sales of your books.
Our guest is USA Today bestselling author Michelle Spiva. In addition to her work as an author, she’s also a counselor, a writing coach, and an extreme data geek. In this episode, we talk briefly about her work as an author, and then get into the types of data authors can use to increase the sales of their books.
We’ll discuss things like avoiding the fear of data, learning from books that are winners, her version of survivor bias, revenue management, push versus pull marketing, and all with lots of examples that will help us to put Michelle’s teaching into action.

Stephen – Loved this episode! I hope you have Michelle back soon…. Listened to the podcast today on my drive home from work. I’m going to have to listen to it again when I can sit in front of my computer and try some of the things you both talked about. Keep the episodes coming. Glad to have you back after the little break.
Doug
Thanks, Doug! It sounds like you enjoyed it almost as much as I did. It’s great to be back.
Great segment. Thanks to your guest teaching her broad knowledge of a worrisome subject for most authors.
Thank you, Thomas. I know this may have been a little too deep for some, but it sounds like it was spot on for you!
Every time I hear Michelle Spiva it’s like drinking from a firehose. I’ve replayed and replayed trying to absorb it all. Now to explore all the links in the show notes. Thanks for guiding this interview, Steve. Please do have her back.
Thanks, great description, “drinking from a firehose.” I sort of felt that way myself as we were chatting. I couldn’t take notes fast enough. I fully intend to have her back on sooner rather than later.
Really great show! So much terrific info. I am terrified of data, my head is still spinning, but Michelle is a master and I’m starting to see the light!
Thanks, Deb! My head was spinning as well when I was talking with her.
